Head of Department for International Development, Ethiopia Visited End Child Marriage Programme’s Community-Based Activities

“We put girls at the center of what we do … Ethiopia’s future is absolutely depends on women and girls” Head of Department for International Development (DFID) Ethiopia, Mr. George Turkington and DFID’s Deputy Head of Office Ms. Jo Moir visited ECMP’s community-based activities at Robit Kebele, Bahir Dar Zuria Woreda (West Gojam Zone of Amhara Region) on 7th December 2016. Initially, the team observed ECMP’s School-based activities, especially safe spaces in Robit Primary School and interacted with teachers and students on how they cascade trainings and empower girls to resist child marriage. The team has discussed with partners, community members, school club facilitators, teachers, school directors and religious leaders on the issue of child marriage and how school-based activities helped promoting girls’ education and empowerment. He learnt a lot about ECMP’s School-based activities and talked to students and school teachers. This session in general enabled the DFID visiting team to witness how ECMP’s work is complementing programmes such as the Gender Education Quality Improvement Programme which DFID also supports. Heads of Standing Committees in the Amhara National Regional State Council Held a Consultative Meeting on Child Marriage

The Amhara National Regional State Council has six different standing committees such as: Women, Children and Youth Standing Committee; Agriculture, Environmental Protection and Water Resource Affairs Standing Committee; Trade, Industry and Urban Development Standing Committee; Human Resource and Tourism Development Affairs Standing Committee; Law, Justice and Administration Affairs Standing Committee; Budget and Finance Affairs Standing Committee. As part of its effort in strengthening strategic engagement with key government bodies at regional level, the programme has been intimately working with the Amhara Women’s Caucus which is known as the Women, Children and Youth Standing Committee. One of the major roles and responsibilities of this Committee is to oversee how practicable are the laws and conventions, which are declared with the purpose of benefiting women and girls in the region. MINISTER OF WOMEN CHILDREN AND YOUTH AFFAIRS VISITS EARLY CHILD MARRIAGE PROGRAMME IN WEST GOJAM

Her Excellency Ms Zenebu Taddesse, Minister of Women Children Youth Affairs in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia visited Finote Hiwot End Child Marriage Programme’s community level activities in West Gojam. During her visit, the Minister met people from Tagel Wodefit kbele in Meche Woreda to hear their views first hand on how this programme to end child marriage had changed their lives.  All sections of the community were invited to share their experiences.  Mothers and fathers told the Minister of how they had cancelled the marriages of their sons and daughters after understanding the true consequences of child marriage.  Two priests told the assembled group about the preaching guidelines prepared by the programme, and how these were now being used to address followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (141 churches in Mecha Woreda received preaching guidelines). It is on public holidays, regular spiritual services and other key social occasions that religious leaders are using their preaching guidelines.
